About Illustration Art

They are images that helped shape society. That influenced popular culture.  And created indelible memories. The illustrated image has always had the power to delight, surprise, and provoke us.

Illustration art is original artwork that was commissioned to visualize stories, products and ideas. Book covers, magazine illustrations, movie posters and advertising are only some examples of art that has driven American pop culture since the early 1900’s.

Once considered merely commercial art, illustration art is now coming into its own.  Thanks to the popularity of artists such as Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, Charles Schulz, Ted Giesel (Dr. Seuss) and Maurice Sendak, the fine art world has come to appreciate the importance and value of this unique craft.

The traditional method of creating illustration art by hand all but disappeared with the emergence of computer graphics software in the mid-1980s. As a result, the art form was virtually lost, making original illustrations all the more rare and difficult to obtain.  Today, there is growing interest in collecting these one of a kind, handcrafted pieces.

Inkwell invites you to discover the fine art of illustration.  And discover something truly original.
